We've been quite a sick house this week. Duncan had some sort of GI bug that sent him home from school for two days early last week, but apart from a cough he seemed ok. Either he got something else or it stayed with him, and he's spent all of this week at home with something that involves stomach cramps and fatigue. We had to post-pone his birthday party, originally scheduled for tonight, by one week, and he is deeply disappointed.
I did my best to take care of him, but wasn't terribly capable as a nursemaid myself, as I was bowled over myself with an aggressive streptococcus infection of the throat and ear, which left me dizzy, fatigued, and by the time I finally made it to see the ENT (or "ORL" en francais) specialist tuesday, so feverish that I was barely coherent, in either language. Thankfully Maggie drove me to the doctor, because at one point I was convinced that we were in England and she should be on the left side of the road. Quite scary...
The antibiotics, iodine throat rinses and antiseptic lozenges - along with lots of fluids and sleep - do seem to have done their work, though, and I'm glad especially since I have to sing some Bach this coming Sunday! I hope to be able to sing the general rehearsal tomorrow morning, and follow it up with the performance. Fortunately it's just two very lyric dancelike arias; no "tremble ye wretched sinners" type stuff in this cantata, for me at least, so that's lucky.
Of more concern is Duncan; I hope he is in good enough shape to play Capitaine VonTrapp tomorrow; they've been rehearsing it for months. He does have another chance, as their spectacle La Melodie de Bonheur plays again next Saturday as part of the larger drama festival but he really doesn't want to let his fellow actors down. Joelle from our congregation is organizing a concert as part of her conservatory programme, and we might just be able to convince Malcolm to play a flute piece in it, to help him prepare for his flute exam this year. One of his pieces chosen by his teacher is the Beethoven Minuet in G minor, which to the uninitiated may seem innocuous, but the sound of him practicing it has had Maggie walking around the house muttering "What's his line? /
He's a fake /
And he doesn't know the territory! / Look, whaddaya talk, whaddaya talk, whaddaya talk, whaddaya talk?"
In other news, Hugh and Sheila should be home any moment; their flight was scheduled for today, so soon they will no doubt be re-established in their home on Skootamatta. Safe journey to them and bon weekend to all.
