We are ready to go... The preparations are finished and we had our technical dress yesterday, with some patrons in the house. All went fairly well and we do the show with a real audience today for the first time.
This is a very rare example of an opera in which the musical saw plays an important role. The excellent percussionist Beverley Johnston will play it from the pit, but I took some lessons from her to make sure that my miming of the playing was correct. It has an otherworldly, shivery sound, a bit like slide guitar or theramin. Very cool.
Yesterday one of the surprise audience members was John Terrauds, musician and music reviewer, and until recently music critic for the Toronto Star, who has for some months published the Music Toronto Blog, with extensive readership within the Canadian music and arts community.
